“One night Mama was wanting some custard and so my dear Daddy set out to try and make some for her. The recipe he found was okay, but didn’t wow anyone, so he went back into the kitchen…changed some things, and thus this wonderful recipe for custard was created!”– Taylor Temple

Daddy’s Baked Custard

6 eggs
1/2 tsp. salt
6 cups whole milk
1 1/2 cups sugar
Ground nutmeg

Break eggs into bowl and beat lightly. Stir in salt, milk, vanilla, and sugar. Pour into a 9×13 inch glass baking dish. Sprinkle nutmeg all over the top. Set dish down into a large pan of very hot water, so that water comes halfway up the side of the baking dish with custard mixture in it–this is important! We just use a large disposable aluminum foil roaster pan to set our glass baking dish into and it works great. Bake at 325 degrees for 1 1/2 to 2 hours or until knife inserted in the center comes out clean.
